Should India too mandate Country or Land Acknowledgement welcome note?
In Australia, Canada and USA, there are rituals of acknowledgement statements before major meetings or events in public and private entities. These are called Land Acknowledgement, Welcome to the Country, Acknowledgement of Country statements.
Should such rituals also be imbibed in India making it mandatory or optional for public or private entity events?
The statement goes as follows:
"I want to acknowledge and pay my respects to the traditional custodians of the land we are gathered on today. I would like to pay my respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging..."
What is Land Acknowledgement?
A land acknowledgement is a formal statement or act of recognition that acknowledges the Indigenous Peoples as the traditional custodians of the land on which we live, work, and gather. It is a way to honor the historical and ongoing connection between Indigenous communities and the territories they have inhabited for thousands of years.
Land acknowledgements serve several purposes:
- Recognition: They recognize and affirm the presence, contributions, and rights of Indigenous Peoples, acknowledging their historical and ongoing relationship with the land.
- Respect: They demonstrate respect for Indigenous cultures, knowledge, and sovereignty, promoting a more inclusive and equitable society.
- Education: They raise awareness about the history and experiences of Indigenous Peoples, fostering a better understanding of colonization, dispossession, and the ongoing struggles for Indigenous rights.
- Reconciliation: They contribute to the process of reconciliation by encouraging dialogue, understanding, and meaningful engagement between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.
Land acknowledgements are becoming increasingly common in various settings, such as public events, educational institutions, government proceedings, and social media platforms. They are a starting point for acknowledging the impacts of colonization and working towards a more just and equitable society.
It is important to note that land acknowledgements should not be seen as a one-time gesture or an end in themselves. Rather, they should be accompanied by continued efforts to support Indigenous communities, advocate for their rights, and engage in ongoing learning and action.
