12am. Next to lit up candles stuck on cake toppings, was my phone, ringing; and my friends looking at me.
Me: “Hello, Hanji, soye ni? (Didn’t sleep?)”
She (singing): “Happy b’day to you...”
This was the scene every year when ever I was away from home, be it any country or city in India I was; she would set her alarms as per 11:55pm standard time of that place every year before my birthday; just to call me up, to be the first one to wish. This year the phone didn’t ring. It seemed my b’day didn’t start this year. I didn’t have that b’day wali feeling this year. It seemed to me “A skipped B’day”. #RIPMom And I remember a week before my CA exams, the loneliest days of studying harder, I forgot my own b’day. 12am, she walked in to my study room, with a lit up candle on a pastry, jingling... Happy b’day to you. #MissYouMom
